These days, everyone is an โexpertโ on everything, and social media can make photography look completely effortless. ๐
We see moms expecting to be caught casually running through the woods in the perfect Vogue pose, looking completely natural, perfectly styled, and somehow never noticing the camera.
But hereโs the truth: the camera is not magic, and your photographer is not just pressing a button. ๐ธ
A beautiful outdoor image takes direction, timing, light, posing, location, patience, and sometimesโฆ a little work! And yes, sometimes we will ask you to do something more than once. ๐
A few helpful tips for your fall session:
๐ Donโt expect perfection. Real moments are often much more beautiful than perfectly posed ones.
๐ Trust your photographer. We are watching the light, background, composition, your hands, posture, expressions, and everything happening around you.
๐ Movement is guided. That โeffortlessโ running shot usually has a photographer giving directions, choosing the right spot, and timing the shutter.
๐ Clothing matters. What looks amazing in person doesnโt always photograph the same way. Movement, colors, textures, and fit all make a difference.
๐ Be realistic about toddlers. They may run, refuse to cooperate, sit in the leaves, or do absolutely nothing we planned. And thatโs okay! Some of the best images happen when we follow them instead of fighting them.
๐ Your photographer cannot change reality completely. The camera can capture you beautifully, but it doesnโt automatically make everyone thinner, taller, younger, or perfectly posed.
๐ Let go and enjoy your family. The more relaxed you are, the more natural your photographs will feel.
Social media shows you the finished image โ not the 15 minutes of walking, repositioning, adjusting, laughing, fixing hair, chasing toddlers, and waiting for the perfect light that happened before it. โค๏ธ
So come to your fall session ready to have fun, trust the process, and let your photographer do what you hired them to do.
Real life. Real families. Beautiful photographs. ๐๐ธ

Fall weather can shift quickly, so it helps to think in layers. Soft sweaters, jackets, dresses with movement, and comfortable shoes all work well for outdoor sessions. Neutral tones, muted earth colors, and textured fabrics photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family.
Try to avoid outfits that are too bold or overly matching. Coordinating colors usually create a more natural look that feels timeless.
Outdoor sessions look best when the light is soft, which is usually closer to sunrise or sunset. In the fall, that light can disappear faster than you expect, so arriving on time is important. A few minutes early gives everyone time to settle in before we begin.
If you have little ones, this can make a big difference. A relaxed start helps children warm up naturally and makes the session feel less rushed.
Children do best when they are fed, rested, and not overloaded with instructions. A snack, a quick break, and a simple explanation of what to expect can help them feel more at ease. There is no need for perfection. Real expressions and real moments are often what make family portraits feel the most meaningful.
At Juodis Photography, I guide sessions gently and keep things calm and efficient so families can relax and enjoy the experience.
Fall can bring wind, chilly evenings, or even a little drizzle. Having a backup plan for outerwear, blankets, and warm layers can help everyone stay comfortable. If the weather does not cooperate, it is always better to adjust than to push through an uncomfortable session.
You do not need to know how to pose or what to do. That is part of my job. I will guide you through the session, so it feels natural and easy, while still creating clean, timeless images that fit your family beautifully.
If you are planning a fall outdoor session in Niles, IL, a little realism and a little preparation can go a long way. The result is usually a better experience and photos you will love for years.
